from a Mother

I was your first home, your first love,
your first arms.
I was your first mentor, your first teacher, your first doctor.
I was your first meal, your first words, your first trust.
I gave you strength, individuality, hope, grace, love and courage.
I laundered you, your clothes, your bed and home.
I fed you, your thoughts and your dreams.
I covered you with my arms, my designs and my stories.
I will always be with you.
I was the place you came from and I will always be with you.
You may hear me in the breeze and in the whispers of the leaves,
but
you will catch your greatest memories of me
when you are not even thinking of
me.
You will remember me as you break over laughing
at your child's antics—
you will hear me in every aspect of that laughter.
You will wonder how we can be so alike,
how your voice caught my intonation and
how you automatically will choose the words or phrases
that you once heard me
speak.
You will see me in your smile;
others will see me in you by the look in your
eye.
I live inside you and your laughter;
nothing and
no one can separate us.
I will always be with you.
